Looking for privacy, value, views and lifestyle? Manasota key has it all. With 43 homes currently on the market, one bay front home under contract and 11 sales in 2011, Manasota Key is becoming a “hot” market. Last year you could have owned a bay front home starting at $685-$775K or a gulfront home from $1.0mi (needing complete renovation) to $4.8mi (with all the bells and whistles). You can still take advantage of the great prices. A bay front home starts at $723K (1.025SF built in 1973); a gulf front home starts at $1.175mi (1,854SF built in 1986).

The temperature dropped and the sweaters came out from the back of the closet…just in time to celebrate a “White” Christmas? White, not from snow, but from the sand being as clean and fine-powdered as I have ever seen in Manasota Key. You could see entire clans of families walking Manasota Key beach and enjoying being with family to celebrate the Season. We spent our days decorating, cooking and baking, playing cards, visiting neighbors, walking the dogs, shopping, reading and staying in touch with friends and family who couldn’t join us this year but wished they had. The fireplace was on most of the time (as well as the Christmas music), creating the right atmosphere of warmth and cheer….and now, it’s back to work to sell more Manasota key real estate and take advantage of historically low interest rates. From my family to yours, Happy New Year and our best wishes for health, peace and an abundance of joy and laughter.

Manasota Key Association planned a social get-together/lunch at La Stanza yesterday afternoon. I’m estimating that around 100 Manasota Key Association members filled the room with their cheerful personalities and great sense of community. Chris Boone is doing a terrific job as social director. We had assigned seating where she decided to separate husbands and wives. At the end of the meeting, she took a vote to see if everyone enjoyed this new approach and sure enough, most hands went up. Our new president, Richard Hess, had just a few words, since he didn’t want to turn the luncheon into a meeting. He is a very personable man, full of energy and ideas on how to maintain or continue to improve the quality of life in Manasota Key, which will ultimately maintain or continue to improve the values of our Manasota Key Real Estate (sorry, but that’s the Realtor in me, always looking for ways to improve our values). David Green introduced our new website, www.mkahoa.org. It’s very user-friendly, attractive and informative and deserves a 10 (on a scale of 1-10). The food was delicious (my fish was very fresh and flavorful) and the conversation was dynamic (my table really had a fun time). It’s always great to welcome our Manasota Key “snow-birds” back (a phrase we use with endearment) and catch up on our lives. Hats off to a job well done!!

Have you ever seen turtles hatching thanks to the efforts of the Turtle Patrol’s protection? Well, it just happened right in front of my house in Manasota Key. Sunday morning we met Diane, a very friendly volunteer, along with 7 helpers, some of which were students volunteering in exchange for some hands-on experience, a little thrill at making a difference and earning community hours. They dug over 100 eggs, some of which had hatched 3 nights before delivering little turtles back into the ocean. The volunteers were looking for those little ones that couldn’t find their way out of the sand and sure enough, they find 2 green ones, which happen to be rare species. After lots of pictures and cheers of celebration, the two were named Michaela and Rafaela. With the help of the volunteers, they made their way to the water and had to be shielded from some threatening seagulls that kept circling the waters. Did you know that only one of every 1,000 make it to adulthood? Did you know that the United States is the only country that protects green turtles? Did you know that in 28-30 years these same turtles, if they make it to adulthood, will return to their natal spot to lay eggs? We spent the rest of the afternoon sitting on shore, enjoying another peacefulday in beautiful Manasota Key and exchanging fascinating stories of these and many other Manasota Key events that we have enjoyed through the years. I can honestly say that the excitement stayed with us the rest of the day, until it was time to wrapped it up and get ready for another busy week in real estate. Did you know that properties over $1.5mi were the only price range whose activity went up last month in the county? If you’re interested in Manasota Key Real Estate , don’t hesitate to call me at 941-356-3970. As a resident, I know the ins and outs of the neighborhood.

The Hermitage Lobster Fest is scheduled for Saturday, November 20th starting at 11AM in Manasota Key. I have heard so much about this fundraiser that this year I accepted an invitation to be on the committee. Michael’s On East received such great review last year, that they have been asked to cater the event again this year. There will be a silent and live auction, great music and a seafood feast to please all. If you want to join me, I’ll be putting a table together, so feel free to call me for your reservation. How can we go wrong when the spectacular views of Manasota Key Beach will serve as the background setting? Hope to see you then and in the meantime, have a safe Labor Day weekend!

Here is the latest update on the oil spill excerpted from reports provided by Ed McCrane, Sarasota County Emergency Management at 12:48 PM, June 7th.

“Oil has reached shore in the Florida panhandle and additional impacts are expected in that area over the next 72 hours due to strong onshore winds. In addition a small amount of oil has entered the Loop Current, but that current seems to be pinched off at the Florida Straits. There is no indication that any other area of Florida will be impacted in the next 72 hours. At present, there is no evidence of oil from this spill within 180 miles of Sarasota County and Manasota Key.

The latest report is that the BP containment dome is having some success. In the last 24 hours it captured 400,000 gallons of oil. The current estimates of oil escaping from the well range from 500,000 to one million gallons per day. BP has announced that they expect the rate of capture to improve and that there will be a second containment dome on site by this weekend. But is now anticipated that some unknown quantity of oil will continue to escape until a relief well is complete in August.

The Florida Department of Natural Resources continues to advise homeowners and others NOT to take unauthorized actions to protect the beaches, or wildlife. Well meaning, but uninformed activities are considered likely to do more harm than good at this time.”

I know all of us have been very concerned about the damage that the spill can have on our waters but so far, the southwest of Florida coastline has been spared any damage at all. The Manasota Key Association sent me an email summarizing the condition as reported by Ed McCrane, Emergency management Chief for Sarasota County Unified Command, as of June 1st: “Currently there has been no impact on ANY of Florida’s coastline and none is anticipated for at least the next 72 hours. The Gulf Loop Current is projected to move the main body of oil west. Impacts to our area, if any, are expected to be in the form of tar balls, or oil sheens. The people involved in the turtle patrols, who are on the beach daily, have been trained to recognize signs of oil. In addition, Sarasota County has set up a number ( 941-650-6608 ), where anyone can report an oil sighting. If oil hits our beaches, most of the clean up is to be done by contractors trained by the State and ultimately paid for by BP. It is not anticipated that residents will be asked or required to participate. This is due to the possible toxicity of the oil and the need for proper training to assist wildlife, or effectively clean the beach or plants. Sarasota County Emergency Management participates in daily conference calls to update all information. At this time, 20,000 personnel and 1,700 vessels are involved in the clean up effort. Approximately 4 million feet of boom has been deployed and about 13.8 million gallons of oil / water mix has been recovered. 120 controlled burns have been conducted, which have removed 2.8 million gallons of oil from the surface. The Barrier Island League ( Casey, Siesta, North Manasota and Manasota Keys ) has met and formed a plan to share information and coordinate requests for assistance from County and State agencies, should that become necessary.”Here are some web sites to monitor this situation: http://www.floridadisaster.org/index.asp ( click on Deep Water Horizon Response )

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ (clcik to check the projected path of the oil ).

The beaches in Sarasota County, including Manasota Key beach, have become crucial habitats for a large congregation of sea turtle nesting during the months of May through October.

Due to a worldwide decline in the sea turtle population, all species are now considered endangered. Federal, State and local regulations provide for their protection. The beaches in Sarasota County, including Manasota Key beach, have become crucial habitats for a large congregation of sea turtle nesting during the months of May through October. Female sea turtles swim to shore looking for favorable temperature and grading changes where they can lay their eggs. When foreign obstacles such as furniture, umbrellas, etc are left outside, sea turtles abandon their nesting attempt in search for a better environment, increasing the chances of non-nesting. Light is also a crucial factor since hatchlings orient themselves in the direction of the brightest horizon. Bright lights will disorient them and move them away from the water, creating death due to starvation, predation or exhaustion. There is a Sarasota County Sea Turtle Protection Program (941-861-5000) to protect their habitat and survival.
